Kibale Crater Lakes

The Kibale crater lakes are located inside the Ndali-Kasenda crater region of the western Rift Valley. The Kibale crater lakes are situated in southwestern Uganda, approximately 350 kilometers from Kampala. The crater lakes can be accessed via the Fort Portal-Kasese route, situated near the boundary of Kibale National Park. The region is characterized by numerous craters, including explosion craters and crater lakes. The craters offer a breathtaking vista and an ideal camping site for enthusiasts seeking an authentic wilderness experience in Africa. The crater lakes are not located within Kibale National Park itself, but are situated on the grounds of the national park.

Kibale National Park is a vibrant tropical rainforest situated in the far southwestern region of Uganda. Kibale National Park is notable for its extensive population of primates, particularly the endangered chimpanzees. Kibale National Park is often termed the primate capital of the world due to its status as the largest primate community in Africa, and possibly the globe; approximately 1,500 chimpanzees inhabit the forest, with some habituated and available to interact with visitors year-round.

Kibale National Park is home to approximately 13 other primate species, including black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue colobus monkeys, and nocturnal primates such as pottos, bush babies, and pangolins, as well as elephants and warthogs, among others. Kibale National Park is a veritable paradise for avian enthusiasts. It contains over 350 avian species. Kibale National Park is a wonderful destination for avid birdwatchers.

While the fauna in Kibale National Park is indeed enthralling, the craters offer a distinctly unique experience for any primate safari in the park. Located near the prominent tourist town of Fort Portal, between the Fort Portal-Kasese route and Kibale Forest, is an ideal destination for crater lake excursions in Uganda.

Formation of the Kibale Crater Lakes

The craters in Kibale National Park were created through a process known as vulcanicity millions of years ago. In contrast to volcanicity that results in the creation of volcanic cones or mountains, vulcanicity encompasses intense and violent volcanic eruptions that displace the surface, subsequently depositing ash, lava, and debris around the depression, thereby creating an explosion crater around by a landscape of ash and lava. Conversely, when craters are inundated with water, they transform into crater lakes, exemplified as Katwe in Queen Elizabeth National Park and others located in Uganda’s volcanic regions.

Nyabikere, Creator lake

The most renowned crater lake in Kibale National Park is Lake Nyabikere, which translates to “the lake of frogs” in the local dialect. Lake Nyabikere is situated a mere 3-minute drive, around 100 meters off the main road, in close proximity to Fort Portal town and Kibale National Park. One can traverse from Nyabikere Crater Lake to Nkuruba, passing via Nyinabulitwa to reach Nyamirima Crater Lake. Nyabikere Crater Lake serves as a renowned starting point for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park.

Another crater lake, known as Nyinambuga Crater Lake, holds significance in Uganda as it is shown on the twenty thousand shillings note. The Nyinambuga crater features turquoise water that offers stunning vistas of the natural landscape. The renowned Ndali Lodge is situated on the ridge of Nyinambuga Crater Lake, offering a stunning view of the lake around 100 meters below.

Nkuruba Crater Lake

Nkuruba Crater Lake is a remarkable crater lake in Kibale that serves as a nature reserve, facilitating progressive education for the local people through financial support. Nkuruba Crater Lake offers an exceptional setting for camping, characterized by serene surroundings. Nkuruba serves as an entrance point to the Top of the World climb, where one can discover the Mahoma Falls and observe numerous explosion craters.

Other accessible crater lakes are Nyamasagani, Ntambi, Mubiro, Lyantonde, and Nyanswiga. Lake Kasenda is linked to fertile soils conducive to agriculture; its fertility has promoted the cultivation of Arabic coffee in the region. This facility offers the opportunity to experience agro-tourism amidst coffee farms.

Numerous crater lakes are located in the Ndali Kasenda region adjacent to Kibale National Park. The Ndali – Kasenda region is characterized by several craters and crater lakes, differing in size and nature, offering picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. Many crater lakes in Kibale are free of bilharzia and safe for swimming, while others offer lucrative fishing opportunities and are ideal for nature treks and cycling. The crater lakes region of Kibale National Park offers an exceptional opportunity for intensive birdwatching, featuring a diverse array of stunning avian species, including the olive long-tailed cuckoo, western tinkerbird, pittas, grey parrot, and ground thrush, all endemic to Kibale National Park, among others.
