Kanyanchu Visitor Centre

Kanyanchu serves as the primary trailhead for chimpanzee hiking in Kibale National Park. Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, situated 10 kilometers from Isunga park offices, serves as the starting point for briefings and chimpanzee treks or monkey walks in Kibale National Park. Kanyanchu is located approximately 35 kilometers from Fort Portal, accessible via the Fort Portal-Kamwenge tarmac road.

Kanyanchu hosts multiple habituated chimpanzee colonies, rendering it a favored destination for chimpanzee trekking. There are more than four habituated chimpanzee communities in Kibale, with Kanyanchu serving as the location for briefings on chimpanzee tracking regulations, with excursions commencing in the early morning or afternoon. The two sessions of chimpanzee trekking at Kanyanchu commence early, with the morning session starting at 8:00 AM following a briefing, and the afternoon session at 2:00 PM.

Kanyanchu chimpanzee treks, or primate walks, run between 2 to 4 hours, and in addition to trekking chimpanzees, there are several activities available to enjoy. These encompass guided primate excursions, forest treks, nature walks, avian observation, and chimpanzee habituation experiences, among others.

Kibale National Park

Kanyanchu Tourist Centre is situated in Kibale National Park, Western Uganda. The park was established in 1993 with the primary purpose of housing its unique primate species. Kibale is recognized as the primate capital of the world, hosting a total of 13 primate species.

Kibale’s primate population comprises approximately 1,500 chimpanzees, along with blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, baboons, vervet monkeys, red colobus monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, pottos, bush babies, black-and-white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and Uganda mangabeys, among others.

Furthermore, the Kibale forests host approximately 60 mammalian species, comprising 500 elephants, 250 butterfly species, 5 antelope species, 3 wild hog species, more than 375 bird species, 70 reptile species, and 351 tree species, among others.

Birding safaris in Kibale

Kibale hosts more than 375 bird species, rendering it an exceptional location for bird identification. The park is home to several sought-after avian species, including the African green-breasted pitta, masked apalis, Nahan’s francolin, blue-headed bee-eater, yellow-spotted nicator, crowned eagle, black-eared ground thrush, collared apalis, blue-breasted kingfisher, and Abyssinian ground thrush, among others.

Chimpanzee trekking constitutes the primary attraction of every Kibale Forest safari. A chimpanzee expedition through Kibale Forest is solely for the purpose of seeing chimpanzees in their natural habitat rather than in captivity. It is a unique experience and should be regarded as essential for Uganda safaris.

Over 1,500 chimpanzees inhabit Kibale Forest, with numerous habituated communities currently available for trekking. To partake in the Kanyanchu chimpanzee/primate walk, each chimpanzee permit is accessible for reserve at USD 200, while permits for the extraordinary chimpanzee habituation cost USD 250 per person.

Standard chimpanzee trekking involves visiting established habituated chimp communities, whereas chimp habituation experiences permit access to semi-habituated populations, requiring a full day or half a day of following the chimpanzees. Expeditions to see chimpanzee populations are conducted by seasoned park guides.

Accommodations in Kibale National Park, Fort Portal

In and around Kibale National Park, there are luxury safari lodges, mid-range lodges, and budget lodges available. The accommodations comprise Primate Lodge, Kyaninga Lodge, Ndali Lodge, Crater Safari Lodge, and Papaya Lake Lodge as luxury lodges; Chimp’s Nest and Kibale Forest Camp as midrange options; and Nyinabulitwa Country Resort & Safari Camp, Chimpanzee Guesthouse, and Rwenzori View Guesthouse as budget lodges.

Accessing Kanyanchu Visitor Centre

The Kanyanchu Visitor Center is located in the center of Kibale National Park, approximately 10 kilometers from the park’s main offices at Isunga. Located approximately 300 kilometers from Kampala along the Mubende-Fort Portal highway, and 35 kilometers from Fort Portal.

Travel by plane to Nyakisharara Airstrip in Mbarara, then drive 98 kilometers via the Kamwenge route to Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. Alternatively, land at Kasese Airstrip, around 80 kilometers from Fort Portal, or fly to the airstrip in Semliki Wildlife Reserve and drive 86 kilometers to Kanyanchu.
