Explore Rusumo Falls in Rwanda: Rusumo Falls is a stunning Waterfalls and one of the most secluded sources of the Nile River. The falls functioned as the initial welcome committee for Europeans who arrived in Rwanda in 1984, although the territory had been incorporated of German East Africa since 1885, and no European had previously visited the area before 1984. The falls functioned as a passageway for Belgians during their occupation of the country in World War I.

The river gained international notoriety during the 1994 Rwanda genocide, as it collects water from all regions of Rwanda except the far west, facilitating the transit of victims via its currents. Notwithstanding the unfortunate incident, the falls remain a prominent tourist attraction and a source of renewable energy, facilitated by the regional Rusumo Falls hydropower facility.

The Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project is administered by the governments of Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania via the jointly owned Rusumo Power Company. A Tripartite Agreement was executed on February 16, 2012, by the three governments to initiate collaborative development.

The project is situated at Rusumo Falls, adjacent to the Rwanda-Tanzania border on the Kagera River, with the power generation facilities located on the southern bank of the Kagera River in Tanzania. The substation in Rwanda is situated on the northern bank of the river.

Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Initiative

The Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project (RRFP) is a hydropower initiative operated by the governments of the Republic of Burundi, the Republic of Rwanda, and the United Republic of Tanzania via a jointly owned entity, Rusumo Power Company (RPCL).

The three governments commenced joint development via a Tripartite Agreement signed on February 16, 2012. The project is located near Rusumo Falls, on the shared border of Rwanda and Tanzania along the Kagera River, with the power generation facilities positioned on the southern bank of the Kagera River in Tanzania. The substation is situated on the northern bank of the river in Rwanda.

Isumo Waterfalls in Nyungwe Forest National Park

This route with great contrasts is an overwhelming sensory experience. The initial segment of the walk to Isumo Waterfalls commences at Nyungwe Forest Lodge, via vibrant green tea plantations adorned with grassy margins maintained by goats, teeming with sun-drenched wildflowers and butterflies.

The trail, measuring 2.3 kilometres, traverses one of Nyungwe’s most densely forested and steepest rainforest ravines. Chill, humid air ascends from the ground, blending with the noises of avians, tree frogs, and insects. It reaches approximately 17 meters in height and is particularly impressive for the force with which it erupts through a narrow aperture into a stunning amphitheater surrounded by swaying fronds of ferns, flowers, and lianas, all flourishing in the autumn mist zone.

On sunny days, caverns appear in the overhanging cliffs, accompanied by a rainbow in the mist. The base of the 13 square kilometer Kamiranzovu Marsh, which cascades over the edge of this water-eroded gorge, is situated three kilometers to the east and at an elevation 100 meters higher.

Volcanoes National Park
