Materuni settlement is situated around 45 minutes by automobile from Moshi, at an elevation of 1300 meters above sea level. It is among the most frequented communities near Moshi. The primary attraction is undoubtedly the Materuni waterfalls and the trek from the village to reach them. However, there are more activities and attractions here, along with other incentives to visit!

Combining a waterfall visit with a local coffee experience and a Chagga lunch is an excellent day trip before or after your Kilimanjaro ascent or safari. You will gain extensive knowledge about Chagga culture, the settlement, the local flora and their applications, and, notably, coffee, which is a significant aspect of Kilimanjaro’s reputation.

The ascent to the town from Moshi, situated at an elevation of 800 meters above sea level, is picturesque and provides a clear insight into the appearance of roads and settlements beyond urban areas.

Hike to Materuni Waterfall Experience

I recommend departing from Moshi at approximately 9 AM, as this allows ample time to complete all activities and return before nightfall, particularly considering my aversion to early mornings. If you choose to arrive earlier, be aware that the office for paying entrance fees opens at 8:30 AM, rendering an earlier arrival unnecessary.

Irrespective of your mode of transportation to Materuni, you must halt at the village office to remit payment. Public transportation ceases at this location, and private vehicles often do not proceed beyond this juncture during the expedition.

I always begin with the waterfall, as it is more calm in the morning, allowing you to avoid encountering those returning on your route. The paths are constricted at several junctures, which might be inconvenient when individuals are traversing in opposing directions. It is also more efficient in terms of time if you wish to obtain the fresh Chagga lunch. The waterfall is a 45-minute walk from the office; however, if you are not physically fit or prefer not to walk, you may take a bodaboda to a location around 15 minutes on foot from the waterfall.

The trek to the waterfall is very uncomplicated physically, though caution is advised following rainfall. Quality footwear is essential, and the use of walking sticks is advisable in damp conditions. In my tour business, we refrain from organizing this hike when we determine that excessive rainfall has rendered the trails excessively muddy. My mother fractured her leg here due to a slip, hence I am very serious. It is a narrative we now find humorous; however, she had to be transported along the exceedingly tiny way on an individual’s back and then on a mattress repurposed as a dubious stretcher after the path widened slightly. A vehicle was dispatched to retrieve her, followed by a distressing one-hour journey over uneven roads to the nearest hospital.

Upon reaching the waterfall, you may certainly take a respite and even partake in swimming. However, be forewarned, as the water is typically frigid! You thereafter trek back for almost one hour, since the route ascends on the return journey. Upon returning to the village, you may proceed to one of the establishments that offers coffee experiences. All provide comparable services and cook Chagga lunches, rendering the choice of establishment rather inconsequential. There are several nearby the workplace, while others require a further walk. The coffee experience is enjoyable, as the locals will sing and dance throughout the entire procedure. You will manually process coffee beans from start to finish, resulting in a delightful cup of fresh coffee.

Materuni is a 45-minute drive from Moshi and a 2 hour and 45-minute trip from Arusha, as the route necessitates passing through Moshi. The standard route is presently inoperable, and I am not of when it will be restored. Consequently, a minor diversion is necessary, which should not exceed one hour.

You may utilize public transportation, arrange a taxi through your accommodation, or engage a licensed tour operator in Moshi.
