What is a group of cheetah called, group of cheetahs is referred to as a coalition. Coalitions often consist of two to three male cheetahs and are typically formed among siblings. A solitary existence is atypical for a male cheetah. A coalition typically comprised of siblings. This coalition generally cohabits and forages together for their entire lives. Subsequently, the group will identify a location (designated as a territory) for settlement. This area may encompass 15 to 30 square miles.

Cheetahs form coalitions to defend their territory against males from rival coalitions. In contrast, female cheetahs are solitary. They predominantly lead solitary lives, traversing and foraging. Female cheetahs exclusively engage with other cheetahs during mating. Female cheetahs generally nurture their progeny for two years before abandoning them to establish coalitions or to live alone. Females nurture their offspring in proximity to at least one other female.

In early 2017, a coalition of five male cheetahs was observed in the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya, by numerous safari guides. This coalition of cheetahs has captivated the hearts and cameras of numerous visitors to the Masai Mara.

The Tano Bora, or “Magnificent Five” in Maa, has challenged certain clichés regarding cheetah behavior as the largest known male cheetah coalition in the Mara. Male cheetahs generally become solitary or establish pairs upon reaching adulthood.

Over the past five years, researchers and guides in Masai Mara have identified distinctive characteristics specific to each of the five male cheetahs. Consequently, each cheetah has been assigned a distinctive name.
