Lake Kivu:
The Largest and Most Renowned Lake in Rwanda

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo:

These two are located in the center region of Kigali, in proximity to Volcanoes National Park, and their most remarkable feature is their beautiful appearance. Lake Muhazi: A Tranquil Refuge Near Kigali, Lake Muhazi is a segment of an elongated lake situated in the eastern region of Rwanda, located around 37 kilometers from the capital city, Kigali. Proximity to the city makes it a favored destination for locals, visitors, and anybody seeking a brief respite from the hustle on weekends. This site is perfect for a day of boating, characterized by tranquil waters and remarkable geographical features.
Other significant activities available in this area are relaxation pursuits such as picnicking, fishing, and birdwatching, as illustrated in the image below of Lake Muhazi. Several lodges and resorts are situated adjacent to the lake, where guests can dine or perhaps stay overnight. Additional aquatic sports, such as kayaking and boating, are prevalent on the lake, which is particularly well-suited for tranquil paddling.
Rwanda Lakes, this has rendered the birds a significant draw for birdwatchers, with numerous species present, including kingfishers, herons, and eagles. The park is encircled by numerous hills and wetlands, rendering it an optimal site for avian enthusiasts.
The optimal period to visit this natural fell is during the dry season, often from June to September. Lake Muhazi serves as an ideal locale for tranquil relaxation, as well as water activities, located within a few kilometers from the vibrant metropolis of Kigali.
Lake Ihema:
A Sanctuary for Wildlife in Akagera National Park, the Akagera Swamp, located in southeastern Rwanda, is the second largest lake in the country and is part of Akagera National Park. This lake serves as a wildlife refuge, offering an opportunity for an intimate observation of some of Rwanda’s most renowned creatures. Along the lake’s periphery, one can observe hippos, crocodiles, and several avian species, among other fauna.
A visit to Ihema Lake is essential for wildlife enthusiasts; a boat safari offers the opportunity to observe creatures in the park that may not be visible during a land-based safari. The area offers excellent photographic prospects since individuals may observe various creatures typically around the water’s edge.
The avian population is another draw; Akagera National Park has documented over 500 bird species, many of which can be observed surrounding Lake Ihema. Facilities: Notable avian species observed surrounding the lake include the African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, and cormorant. It is recommended to visit Lake Ihema in the dry season, specifically in June, July, August, and September. A visit to the LI is strongly advised in conjunction with a tour to Akagera National Park to fully enjoy the fauna of one of Rwanda’s biodiversity hotspots.
