1 Day Materuni Waterfalls and coffee tour

1 Day Materuni Waterfalls and coffee tour, situated in the picturesque foothills of Kilimanjaro, the charming settlement of Materuni is inhabited by the Chagga people and renowned for its fragrant, robust coffee. During this aromatic and enjoyable outing, you will have the opportunity to prepare your own coffee correctly and discover the secret to an ideal cup of coffee from the indigenous Chagga people. Subsequently, you will traverse the brief although demanding path to the Materuni Falls, where you can position yourself beneath the cascading waters that flow into a quiet pool suitable for bathing. Upon completing your hike and experiencing a pleasant perspiration, there is nothing more rejuvenating than immersing yourself in the refreshing waters. Indulge in your packed lunch either prior to or subsequent to your swim – there are no restrictions!

Begin your short expedition with the captivating drive from Moshi down the verdant inclines of Mount Kilimanjaro to the settlement of Materuni, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters above sea level. This region is a market garden, characterized by an optimal combination of climate and soil conducive to cultivating some of the finest coffee in Africa. You will tour a coffee farm to understand the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of coffee, and you will engage in roasting and producing a fresh cup of coffee using traditional Chagga methods. Following an enjoyable coffee break, significantly superior to those at work, you will embark on a picturesque 45-minute stroll over the hills and valleys towards the Materuni Falls. You will traverse banana and coffee farms, navigate mini-valleys, cross peaks, and pass through small, splashing rivulets. Your guide will educate you about local flora and its applications in cuisine and traditional medicine, while also providing deeper insights into Chagga culture.

Meru Waterfalls

This is your opportunity to inquire about a lifestyle that is likely quite distinct from your own. The Falls will be audible before they are visible, and upon their appearance, you may be fortunate enough to witness a rainbow hue as the cascading waters refract the sunlight. The Falls are concealed within an unspoiled valley, flanked by cliffs rising to 200 feet above. The mountain waterfall cascades vertically in a glistening veil, splashing into the undulating pool where one can float, swim, and relax—literally, since these are pristine mountain waters, unheated by the sun. However, it will be appreciated following your hike.

Day 1: Moshi to Materuni Village

There are two transportation alternatives available between Moshi town and the settlement. For anyone seeking an authentic experience, one can board a dala dala (the local minibuses). For a swifter and more comfortable journey, you may choose for a private car. Upon arriving at the village, you will commence your coffee tour at a typical Chaggah ‘shamba.’

Your guide will elucidate all facets of the Chaggah farmhouse, including the additional crops cultivated beyond coffee. You will observe the coffee production process, from bean harvesting to roasting, culminating in the enjoyment of a delectable cup. After your coffee tour, you will embark on a little hike (see you wear appropriate sports or hiking boots, since the terrain may be muddy), traversing small communities to arrive at the waterfalls.

You can either receive a picnic lunch box or be greeted with a complete array of freshly made food by a local family. After lunch, you will have the chance to swim in the invigorating (quite cold!) pools behind the waterfalls.
